Hypnotherapy can be a powerful and effective technique to help you stop smoking and remain a non-smoker for the rest of your life.

Whereas smoking once used to embody being social, friendship, belonging and connection, today it is seen as antisocial, unhealthy and has connotations of lack of self-control, unprofessionalism and being antisocial.

Quitting smoking can be a huge challenge for a lot of people, but we all know that the negatives can outweigh the benefits. In fact the positive benefits can start within 20 minutes of your last cigarette!

In fact within:

48 hours – all carbon monoxide is flushed out. Your lungs are clearing out mucus and your sense of taste and smell start to improve

72 hours – your bronchial tubes have started to relax making your breathing feel easier. You energy will be increasing

2 – 12 weeks – circulation will have improved

6 weeks – smokers who quit have better mental health than those who continue to smoke

3 – 9 months – coughs, wheezing or breathing problems will have improved as your lung function increases

1 year – your risk of a heart attack with have halved compared with a smoker

How Hypnotherapy Can Help You Quit Smoking

There has been extensive research carried out across the globe about how effective hypnotherapy is at helping people quit smoking – the evidence varies considerably depending on which research you look at, as there are a number of factors that contribute to how successful a person is.

I believe that if you are fully committed to being a non-smoker and have the desire and the motivation to stop, hypnotherapy can be extremely effective at helping you quit smoking and remaining a non-smoker for the rest of your life.

Hypnotherapy works by breaking the negative behaviours and thinking patterns associated with smoking. When you decide to stop smoking it requires a change; a change in habits, in routines, in thoughts etc. Hypnotherapy focuses on these changes.

What Will Happen in the Hypnotherapy Sessions?

When I work with clients I see them on two separate occasions, which last for about 1.5 hours each.

During the first session I will ask you lots of questions to help me understand more about you and your smoking history, for example the circumstances around when you started smoking, your family’s smoking history, your smoking habits, your motivating for becoming a non-smoker, your barriers to quitting, the best cigarette of the day, the factors that keep you smoking etc…

We will also use this first session to help you understand more about hypnosis and we will use hypnosis to help you prepare to become a non-smoker.

I also use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques to look at your triggers, beliefs, thoughts and behaviours with regards to smoking. This approach complements hypnotherapy and ensures you remain a non-smoker.

Finally, we will discuss the goals and challenges for you to work on over the next week, until our next session.

Some hypnotherapists use a standard hypnosis script, however in between your sessions I utilise this time to review all the information we have gathered and use it to create a completely bespoke hypnosis experience that allows me to tap into your unconscious mind in a way that is truly personal to you. This ensures a more effective approach.

In approximately a week’s time we will hold your second, and final session. We will begin by discussing what changes you have noticed over the last week, followed by a more lengthy hypnosis session. After which you will leave as a non-smoker and will have a bespoke action plan to support you with your continued journey as a lifelong non-smoker!

Tips To Help You Quit

I am a great believer in taking a holistic approach and the more tools and techniques available to you, the more you can pick and choose the right ones to support you, to ensure your success as a non-smoker.

  1. Understand what your motivation is
    • List all your reasons to quit
    • List all the benefits to quitting
    • List all the negatives associated with smoking
    • Keep this list with you at all times and read it regularly to remind you of your motivation
  2. Tell people you are quitting
    • You are more likely to stay committed to being a non-smoker if you have publicly announced that you are quitting
    • Tell your friends, family and colleagues – help them understand what support they can give you
  3. Use smoking aids
    • Some people find that hypnotherapy is enough to break the habit, however others combine it with nicotine replacement therapy or medication. It will be helpful to discuss your options with your GP
  4. Have a plan if you are tempted to smoke
    • I will support you to formulate your personal action plan, which you can turn to in times of temptation. You may not require it, but it is helpful to know that it is there is you require it.

The Bespoke Smoking Cessation package at Invigorate Therapy costs £195. It is likely you will save this in about a month of being a non-smoker.
